Future Hudson: An Urban Designer’s Imaginings, What ifs, & Why Nots by Matthew Frederick

Join Hudson architect and bestselling author Matthew Frederick as he draws on principles from his new book, ‘101 Things I Learned in Urban Design School’, to explore how we might repair Hudson’s trouble spots and shape its future.

Join Hudson architect and bestselling author Matthew Frederick as he draws on principles from his new book, ‘101 Things I Learned in Urban Design School’, to explore how we might repair Hudson’s trouble spots and shape its future. The program will look at a redesigned waterfront, a rethought Second Ward, a revamped Seventh Street Park, a new home for Kite’s Nest, and even a dramatic new neighborhood with its own Main Street. A discussion and book signing will follow.

Hudson’s fortunes have improved greatly since the blight and disinvestment of the late 20th century. But what lies ahead for Hudson? Can better urban design shape it into a more equitable, livable city? Can the truck route problem be solved? Can Bliss Tower be better integrated into Hudson’s urban fabric? Can our parks become more proper public amenities? And if Hudson were to grow again—its current population is one-half its 1930 peak—how might this happen?

Matthew Frederick is an architect, urban designer, the author of the bestselling 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School, and the creator of the 101 Things I Learned book series. His latest book, 101 Things I Learned in Urban Design School, is out this month and will be available for sale after the program. He lives in the City of Hudson.

This past April, Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM relocated its Hudson studio to the First Presbyterian Church, at Warren and 4th streets. Moving WGXC’s primary broadcast studio to a central location has already boosted the station’s visibility and increased community access. The change has revitalized staff and programmers alike and brought a new energy to daily efforts. First Presbyterian’s staff and volunteers have contributed in a significant way to this surge in enthusiasm, going above and beyond to help with the move itself and making everyone feel at home in this historic building.

The WGXC Hudson Studio is open to the public, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The studio entrance can be found on the 4th Street side of the building, off Cherry Alley, across from the Hudson Post Office. You can listen to WGXC on 90.7 FM, or stream it at wavefarm.org/wgxc
