Chatham Art Scene, New Gallery Opening – Gallery@Chatham

There’s a new art gallery in Chatham village! The Gallery@Chatham, an extension of Gallery@Rhinebeck, is now open to the public at 34 Main Street in Chatham.

There’s a new art gallery in Chatham village! The Gallery@Chatham, an extension of Gallery@Rhinebeck, will officially open to the public on Saturday, June 2. The gallery was founded by Pat D’Antonio, executive director of the Gallery@Rhinebeck, and will follow the successful model of the Rhinebeck location. This unique and innovative, nonprofit venue will feature a rotating collection from local artists. The gallery will also host community events, and serve as a platform for member-driven volunteer efforts throughout the community.

According to D’Antonio, “The Gallery@Rhinebeck has been a huge hit; the model brings tremendous value to locals and tourists. We are really excited to set up the same thing in Chatham, and in other Hudson Valley towns and villages as well in the near future. With our combination of high-end local art, community outreach initiatives, and our Hudson Valley Celebrity Series events, there’s really something for everyone to experience. We’re a nonprofit public service organization, a win for all involved. We give artists a chance to get much-deserved exposure while also giving back to the community.”

D’Antonio continued, “We were looking to expand into other parts of the Hudson Valley and hadn’t thought of going as far north as Chatham, but after meeting Melissa Pollack and some of the artists from Creative Columbia, we felt compelled to make it happen.”

Pollack, a local designer and supporter of the arts in Chatham, is a big Chatham booster, very down-to-earth, and realizes the work required to get something like this done. She agreed to join our board along with local artist Nancy Rutter.”

According to D’Antonio, Creative Columbia has also been instrumental in the Gallery@Chatham project. He shares: “Creative Columbia is kind of a social group that gets together once a month for a dinner and discussion about what’s going on with art in the area. Recently, Carl Berg, a local photographer, spoke up and told everyone that there was a great gallery space in Chatham coming on the market. He said something to the affect that the group should take the lease and form their own gallery. Another member of Creative Columbia, Gerard Seligman, who is also a member of gallery@rhinebeck, responded by saying, ‘I know the guy to call.’”

I stopped by Gallery@Chatham for an early look at some of the artists’ works on display. To see the full list of Current Artists, visit GalleryChatham.org/pages/artists

Adam Brent: Heroic Faces Art Exhibit Opening at Thompson Giroux Gallery

The next featured artist at the Thompson Giroux Gallery is Adam Brent, the sculptor and painter, with the exhibit, Adam Brent: Heroic Faces.

The next featured artist at the Thompson Giroux Gallery is Adam Brent, the sculptor and painter, with the exhibit, Adam Brent: Heroic Faces.

Adam Brent, Heroic Faces, 2018, Wood, plastic, paint, ceramic, linoleum tile, resin, 58” x 19” x 21”

Brent creates sculptures and paintings that fuse together new techniques with familiar forms to create something entirely new. “Heroic Faces” and the accompanying works employ colors and patterns inspired by mid 20th century classic porcelain figurines and a palette derived from a range of every day linoleum tile. Colors bleed together and penetrate through the plastic forms with sheen and a disco ball like refraction. The viewer will be impacted by the simultaneously buoyant and seemingly deflated objects, while also mining the notions of loneliness, self doubt, unfulfilled purpose and broad new possibilities. These expressive and meticulously crafted sculptures encourage us to look for meaning in entirely new forms and bodies unknown to the world.
