PS21’s Essential Cinema ARTISTS’ CHOICE SERIES: Cinematic works are screened in PS21’s open-air pavilion, and chosen by a variety of notable artists of various disciplines living and working in the Hudson Valley, illustrating how cinema has inspired their work. FRANCINE PROSE selects the second film in the Artists’ Choice Series, DIABOLIQUE (1955) Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot.(French with English subtitles, 117 minutes, Black & White)

About the Film:
Before Psycho, Peeping Tom, and Repulsion, there was Diabolique. This thriller shocked audiences in Europe and the U.S. It is the story of two women—the fragile wife and the willful mistress of the sadistic headmaster of a boys’ boarding school—who hatch a daring revenge plot. With its unprecedented narrative twists and terrifying images, Diabolique is a heart-grabbing benchmark in horror filmmaking, featuring outstanding performances by Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, and Paul Meurisse.
