‘Picardy’, a New Album from Ben Smith

If you were listening to The ECLECTIMANIAC Radio Show on WGXC last night (September 19, 7 – 9:30), you might have heard our interview with musician, Ben Smith. Ben spent some time with us to answer questions and discuss his new album, ‘Picardy’.

If you were listening to The ECLECTIMANIAC Radio Show on WGXC last night (September 19), you might have heard our interview with musician, Ben Smith. Ben spent some time with us to answer questions and discuss his new album, ‘Picardy’.

Here’s how Ben describes his new album,

Ben Smith performing @ Woody Guthrie tribute. – photo Lisa Schaffer

“In music theory, the picardy third–also known as the “happy third”–is an altered tone that turns a sad piece of music into a happy one. It brings a hopeful resolution where the listener was expecting resignation. In the key of C, it’s the difference between an E flat and an E natural. It’s a sigh of relief.

In a more general sense, this is what music does for us: it raises our spirits, one note at a time. It’s a quality we find in our closest friends and one we hope to find in our community and country. In a time of such loud division, wouldn’t it be great if our greatest impulses got the picardy treatment, guided by an elevation towards compassion and respect–and ultimately, love? To a certain extent, that’s what the songs on Picardy are all about.”

We played a couple songs on the show last night from Picardy. If you liked what you heard, and want to hear more or purchase the album, you can do so at Ben’s Bandcamp website. Or on iTunes. It’s also available on streaming platforms:  SpotifyiTunesAppleMusicGooglePlayTidal

Psychic Medium, Deborah Hanlon at Club Helsinki

Psychic medium Deborah Hanlon, who specializes in connecting people with loved ones who have passed on, will be in Hudson.

Hanlon was named Favorite Psychic Medium in About.com’s Reader’s Choice Awards in 2012. Hanlon discovered she has the ability to connect with dead people in August 2001. She has since provided readings for over 3,000 people all over the country.

Hanlon attributes most of her ability to events early on in her life, mainly the illness and death of her 4-year-old brother, Christopher, when she was only 3. Hanlon believes that it was because she was so young and still so open that she knew very early on that her brother did not “die” as everyone else saw it; she knew Christopher was always still around.

Wish You Were Here: A Look Back at Life in Hudson Through Vintage Postcards at Hudson Area Library

The Hudson Area Library presents Wish You Were Here: A Look Back at Life in Hudson Through Vintage Postcards. This marks the library’s first ever History Room collection exhibit, and is curated by David Murphy of Hudson, former president of the library’s Board of Trustees and a member of its History Room Committee.

What did people do to connect with each other before telephones, internet, and instant messaging? Many sent postcards, even if it was to a friend or relative just a few miles away. Wish You Were Here examines and celebrates that era.

The Hudson Area Library History Room has collected an extensive set of postcards from this river city, most from the early 1900s, that tell charming personal stories about life here 100 years ago. The collection illuminates how essential this widely used method of communications was for travelers, family and friends in and around Hudson. It includes many street scenes of Hudson, prominent buildings such as the county courthouse, and parks such as Promenade Hill.

There will an opening reception on Thursday, September 6, which includes a presentation on the collection, hosted by Gary Sheffer, a native of Hudson. This will be followed by a wine and cheese gathering. The library will also have note cards and t-shirts for sale with an image of an iconic historic Hudson postcard.

DATE/TIME:
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 6, 2018: 6 – 8pm
Exhibition: September 6 – October 31, 2018

ADMISSION:
Free and open to the public

LOCATION:
