Free First Weekend Wanderings at Olana, Feb 5

Kickstart your month outdoors with Olana’s Free First Weekend Wanderings. Learn more about Olana and its artist-designed landscape during hour long walking tours beginning at the Wagon House Education Center at the historic farm complex. Each tour will cover a different portion of Olana’s 250-acre landscape and 5 miles of carriage roads. This gentle walk will cover about 1 mile; please wear weather-appropriate apparel and comfortable footwear.

Olana’s Winter Solstice Celebration, Dec 18

Celebrate the changing of the seasons during this special community solstice celebration on December 18th. Join Olana to usher in the new season with a series of free opportunities to experience Olana’s beautiful winter landscape.

*Enjoy free partial access to the first floor of Olana’s historic interiors.

*Take in Olana’s famous views in a new way during a special audio performance by the artist collaborative, b e i n g-s o u n d (free, advanced registration required here).

*Watch the sunset and enjoy hot apple cider from Samascott Orchards and gingerbread donuts from Stewart’s Shops.

*Outdoor art-making activities will be available for kids and families.

*A Solstice Mix by Basilica Hudson will be available for seasonal listening.

*Warm-up by a sunset bonfire.

In addition to welcoming a new season, we’ll be saying goodbye to Jean Shin’s art installation, FALLEN during this event. At dusk, parts of the hemlock will be cremated into ash and charcoal and the rest will be returned to the landscape to nourish the living hemlocks at Olana. Introduction to Art Omi Tour, Nov 6

Art Omi presents a walking tour of the Sculpture and Architecture park on Saturday, November 6.

Whether you’re a first-time or frequent visitor to Art Omi, there’s plenty to learn on our seasonal public tours of the Sculpture & Architecture Park. This tour provide insights and information about the artworks and architectural pavilions in the Sculpture & Architecture Park, as well as information about Art Omi’s various programs. Pre-registration is required.

The Introduction to Art Omi Tour is a walking tour that will last roughly one hour, and is limited to 12 participants.

For visitors with mobility concerns, Art Omi offers volunteer-driven loops through the grounds. Pre-registration for Volunteer-led Golf Cart Loops is required two weeks in advance, by emailing tours@artomi.org, or calling (518) 392-4747.

Olana’s Spring Tree Walk w/ Farmscape Ecology Program, May 22

Explore Olana’s artist-designed landscape by taking a closer look at trees growing onsite. During this gentle hour-long walking tour, you will meet various tree species, and learn how to recognize them and what role they are playing in the landscape. This tour will be led by Conrad Vispo and Claudia Knab-Vispo from the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program, which cultivates compassion for the local ecological and cultural landscape.

Olana’s Fallen: Hemlock Walking Tour, Apr 3

Get up close and personal with hemlocks throughout Olana’s artist-designed landscape. Rebecca Pinder Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia-Greene Community College, will guide participants in identifying these important trees and learning more about the current challenges facing hemlocks today. As part of this hour-long walking tour, participants will be invited to locate hemlocks throughout Olana’s 250 acres and take part in an immersive tree mapping project by the artist Jean Shin.

This program is offered in conjunction with Fallen, Shin’s site-specific work at Olana on view from May 1-October 31, 2021. To learn more about Fallen, please visit https://www.olana.org/exhibitions/fallen/.
