Olana Exhibit, Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape

The Olana Partnership, in collaboration with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, presents Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape, the first winter exhibition at Olana State Historic Site. The exhibition, shown primarily in the Sharp Family Gallery at Olana, highlights Frederic Church’s iceberg sketches from his 1859 intrepid voyage to the Arctic.

Risking his life, Church chartered a ship to the treacherous waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador—an area known as Iceberg Alley—on a mission that made him the first American artist to explore the region for the purpose of painting icebergs, a landmark event in the history of art. The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments during our period of climate change.

DATE/TIME: Sunday, November 20, 2022 – March 26, 2023

Olana Free Webinar: Traditional Patterns and New Narratives: Exploring Toile de Jouy, Feb 17

Olana is hosting a free webinar, ‘Traditional Patterns and New Narratives: Exploring Toile de Jouy‘ on Thursday, February 17th.

While “toile de jouy” is best known for depicting bucolic scenes of 18th and 19th century life, contemporary artists and designers have upended these associations through their own takes on toile. During this program, Sheila Bridges will discuss the development of her prominent Harlem Toile De Jouy design as well as her Hudson Valley Toile series and be joined by textile artist Richard Saja for a conversation on the ways the legacy of toile has been altered, homaged, and expanded moderated by journalist Sabine Rothman. As Sheila Bridges’ prominent toile serieses incorporate new and unexpected images into a toile motif–such as scenes reflecting Sheila Bridges’ African American heritage or images of Frederic Church painting a cell tower–Saja uses embroidery to create unexpected images out of traditional toile fabric. This lively moderated conversation will examine how a historic design can be used to tell new stories and incorporate diverse narratives.
