Columbia Land Conservancy Under the Surface: Lake Explorers at Olana, Aug 13

Join the Columbia Land Conservancy and Olana for a Stream & Pond Backpack Program, Under the Surface: Lake Explorers at Olana, August 13th.

Join Columbia Land Conservancy‘s Jenifer Rosete for an afternoon of lake exploration. Take a closer look at Olana’s man-made Lake to learn what macroinvertebrates are living below the surface and what they can tell us about water quality. Waders, nets, and field guides will be provided. The Columbia Land Conservancy works with their community to conserve the farmland, forests, wildlife habitat and rural character of Columbia County, strengthening connections between people and the land.

Jenifer Rosete joined CLC in October 2020 and is a Columbia County native with a degree in Environmental Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology Jenifer enjoys connecting to nature through hiking, bird watching, photography, and searching for geocaches.

Difficulty level: Short walk to the lake, then we will be exploring the pond with nets, magnifying glasses, field guides, waders.

What to bring: Sunscreen, water, weather appropriate clothing and footwear. Waders, nets, and field guides will be provided.

Columbia Land Conservancy Maps and Navigation Workshop, Mar 5

Join the Columbia Land Conservancy and Sarah Katan of Whale of a Trail to learn how to navigate a map and read a compass.  

Come explore Siegel-Kline Conservation Area with new eyes using a map and a compass with Sarah Katan, founder of Whale of a Trail Adventures. Often referred to as navigation or orienteering, being able to use a map and compass successfully is an essential skill to add to your toolkit before heading out on your next outdoor adventure.

During this 1 hour workshop, participants will be introduced to the new CLC conservation area maps, how to read them, how to use a compass, and the 6 Ds of navigation. This workshop is perfect for individuals and families interested in beginner or refresher map. All ages are welcome!

Difficulty level: Easy. We will be navigating through the different trails and will mostly follow along the Meadow Loop Trail. The walk will be roughly under a mile.

What to bring: Weather appropriate clothing: layers, hat, gloves, warm shoes, water bottle. Compasses and maps will be provided.

Art School of Columbia County has several classes in November that will appeal to a range of people.

Screen Shot 2019-11-03 at 8.18.16 PM.pngTRAVEL SKETCHING IN WATERCOLOR with Jean Mackay on Saturday, November 9, 9am to 1pm. Bring home the memories of your travel with more than photographs. Learn tips, techniques, and layout ideas for sketching on the go and capturing your experiences in watercolor.

All levels. $50.

 

Screen Shot 2019-11-03 at 8.30.05 PM.pngSHADES OF GREY with Maj Kalfus on Wednesday, November 13, 10 am to 1 pm. Explore what you can do with chiaroscuro – the use of strong contrasts between light and dark – in this class with Maj. Contrast can give a sense of volume and also affect the composition of a picture. Learn to be more intentional with this technique.

All levels. $50.

 

 

Screen Shot 2019-11-03 at 8.32.49 PM.pngABSTRACT LANDSCAPE PAINTING with Tim Ebneth on Thursdays, November 7, 14, and 21, from 11 am to 2 pm. this class explores the abstraction of representational landscape images. The class will work with acrylic painting and learn various paint techniques, set up a palette, image transfer and examination of shapes, textures and color.

All levels, but some painting experience is helpful. $150.

 

Screen Shot 2019-11-03 at 8.35.08 PM.pngMORE COLLAGE! with Tim Ebneth on Wednesdays, November 13, and 20, from 2 to 4 pm. An ongoing dialouge with the collage using photographs, fabric, papers, found objects and ephemera. Mixed media like acrylic paint, graphite, watercolor and gouache.
The class is open to those with some collage experience. $120

Art School of Columbia County Workshop: Sketching the Garden, Aug 8

Art School of Columbia County is holding a workshop called, ‘Sketching the Garden’ this Thursday.

Participants will find something beautiful in the school’s garden and let instructor, Kelly Kynion show how to capture it with simplicity and style. Bring a sketch book, pencils, eraser, hat, and portable stool.

Hands On Workshop Series at Red Hook Library: Art Journaling

Having creative outlets as a habit has been linked to happiness and improved mental health. Get your year started off creatively with the next in the Red Hook Public Library series of Hands On workshops — Art Journaling for adults

Learn tips and techniques in creating a daily practice of drawing, doodling, painting and collage from local artist Pamela Deitrich. Bring favorite drawing tools and a blank sketchbook if you’d like, but supplies will also be provided.
