Roeliff Jansen Library’s 7th Annual Community Dine Out

Screen Shot 2020-01-19 at 6.45.44 PM
Roeliff Jansen Commuity Library‘s 7th Annual Dine Out for the Library series will kick off on Thursday, January 23, and continue through April 16.

Dine Out for the Library is an ongoing promotion that benefits both the library and local businesses in our community. Each week, a different restaurant will be hosting Dine Out hours and donate 10% of proceeds to the library. By partaking in this series, diners get to enjoy a delicious meal while supporting both small businesses during a slow period of the year and Roeliff Jansen Community Library, at no additional cost to you!

The first restaurant featured is Swiss Hutte in Hillsdale. Other restaurants participating in this year’s Dine Out include Hillsdale House, Four Brothers, and the Roe Jan Brewing Company, among others. Additionally, Dad’s Diner, in Copake, will be hosting Dine Out hours all day on February 3, as will the cafè at Random Harvest, in Craryville, on February 15.

A new Dine Out feature this year will be Community Tables, which, on select dates, will make it easy for people without a dinner companion to make some new friends. To join a Community Table, you can sign up in advance at the library, or email Marilyn Gross at mlgross27@optonline.net.

unnamed
The 2019 Roeliff Jansen Commuity Library, “A Party in the Park,” will be held next Saturday at the Roeliff Jansen Park. The 10th Annual Gala will celebrate Charlotte Shutts, a life-long Roe Jan resident, who has been a valued Library volunteer for 15 years. Shutts served as Secretary of the Friends and then President for six years. She can be found at the Library circulation desk every Friday morning.

As always there will be great food from local chefs and restaurants to enjoy with tasty wines. Music will be provided by Kris Jensen’s Swinging All-Stars with vocalist Wanda Houston, presenting American Songbook selections.

Popular Gala fundraising traditions returning this year include a raffle basket, valued at $1,000. The “Hygge=Comfort” basket features a super-soft throw, a copy of “The Year of Living Danishly,” and assorted items and gift certificates.

The silent auction will include over 75 items and experiences. Information on silent auction items is on view now at the library. You can also leave an absentee bid for items at the library.

The live auction, presided over by Copake Auction’s auctioneer Seth Fallon, will include tickets to Disney’s “Frozen” on Broadway, front row seats to ABC’s “The View,” a weekend stay at the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and three entirely different priceless culinary experiences provided by noted chefs.

Those who wish to honor this year’s honoree, Charlotte Shutts, can add a message to be featured in the on-screen tribute at the Gala. Forms for doing this are available at the library and HERE.

Hillsdale Historian Chris Atkins “The Original Route of the Columbia Turnpike” at Roeliff Jansen Library, Jan 19

historic+east+gate+4
Hillsdale Co-Town Historian Chris Atkins will present his findings after a yearlong investigation into the original path of the Columbia Turnpike. Many people believe that the turnpike followed the path of today’s State Route 23, but in fact, as Atkins will demonstrate, the original turnpike diverged from today’s RT. 23 in at least two areas.

“As a trustee of the Friends of East Gate Toll House, I was curious to see if I could find the location of the long gone Middle Gate Toll House,” Atkins said. “In my search, I could see that the original turnpike could not have followed Rt. 23 from the Massachusetts line to the Hudson River and set out to find the actual route – ultimately to create a map showing the path.”

Participants will receive an 11”x17” copy of the map, which also includes information about many of the historic structures that still exist on the original turnpike path.
