Art OMI Exhibit Opening – OnSite: Yolande Daniels

OMI International Arts Center continues it’s OnSite series from Art Omi: Architecture with Yolande Daniels.

The exhibition will feature a steel panel from a 2010 installation of an outdoor pavilion of folded waterjet cut sheet steel and cast concrete hemisphere seating for the Evergreen Museum at Johns Hopkins University. The project responds to the decorative exuberance of a demolished tearoom on the grounds of the former mansion and references tea fantasies from the tranquility of the Japanese tea ceremony to the psychedelia of Alice in Wonderland’s tea party.

Hillsdale Historic House Tour Visits Future Historic Houses

Hillsdale’s Historic House Tour returns with a twist. This year the tour will visit six “future historic houses”: examples of exemplary 21st century design, and highly energy efficient and green building. The houses range from the boxy and sleek to a wood and window filled home with touches of whimsy and include a certified passive house, a net zero one and an energy-efficient pre-fab house.

A box lunch prepared by Simons Catering is included with the tour and will be served under a tent at the Roeliff Jansen Community Library, which is a green building. During lunch, architects from Hudson-based firm BarlisWedlick will present a talk: Classic and Modern: Designing homes in Columbia County for the 21st Century. Tours of the green features of the library, including solar panels, geothermal, light shelves and light tubes, will be available.

A Patron’s party will be held at a hilltop villa in Hillsdale from 5 pm to 7 pm on Sunday evening, August 13. This event honors the homeowners who opened their houses for the tour and purchasers of Patron tickets at $100 per person or Sponsor tickets at $150 per person are invited to attend. Designed by architect Dennis Wedlick of BarlisWedlick, with interiors by Matthew White of White Webb, Otium is inspired by the ancient houses of Italy with 21st century elements, making it a true modern villa and one of the future historic houses of Hillsdale.

Sponsor tickets include the tour, entry to the Patron’s Party and the sponsor’s name or business listed in all event material. For more information contact hillsdalehousetour@gmail.com.

The Hillsdale Historic House Tour is sponsored by Historic Hillsdale. Proceeds will go towards the preservation of the East Gate Toll House on Route 22 in Hillsdale and provide funding to repair and maintain some of the historic cemeteries in the town.

DATE/TIME:

Johnsen Schmaling’s Linear Cabin

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-4-58-27-pmA recent project from the Johnsen Schmaling Architecture firm presents a contemporary take on the traditional cabin in the woods. The ‘Linear Cabin’ is a simple, 900-square-foot rectangular structure with rustic charm, and glass walls for enjoying the surrounding views.

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-4-59-35-pm

The cabin is comprised of three identically sized, boxes that are separated by spatial voids, and tied together with a continuous, thin roof plane that spans the entire length of the building. The storage box acts as a shed with room for lawn equipment, canoes, or whatever needs to be stored. The service box contains the cabin’s home infrastructure, including entry, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and boiler room. The sleeping box houses two bunk rooms. The area between the storage and service boxes is open in the front and back, and provides a covered spot for a vehicle. The void between service and sleeping boxes is the center of the cabin, and acts as the living area. This room features 15’ wide glass doors and a wood-burning stove.

Johnsen Schmaling’s Linear Cabin was built in the sparsely populated Northwoods region of Wisconsin, but I can see this building fitting in perfectly here in Columbia County. It was built using regionally sourced materials, including a variety of timber products harvested in Wisconsin’s northern forests. The boxes are clad with blackened pine planks, and varnished cedar is used throughout the structure. The interior walls and ceilings are covered in knotty pine, and floors are polished dark-grey concrete.

Last Chance for Follies, Function & Form: Imagining Olana’s Summer House

summerhouse
This week is the last chance to check out the exhibition, “Follies, Function & Form: Imagining Olana’s Summer House,” at Olana.

The 1886 Plan of Olana is highly accurate, however, the plans contain a mysterious structure labeled “Summer House”. According the the Olana site, “Summer houses were common in early American gardens and public landscapes, yet there is no documentary evidence about the style or form of this structure at Olana”. The exhibition asked 21 architects and landscape architects to imagine what the summer house and it’s environs might look like, then sketch those ideas, much in the way Frederic Church used sketches to convey his design and architectural ideas. Each designer was free to explore and combine historic and contemporary design themes.
