Spencertown Academy’s Garden Lecture with Robert Clyde Anderson will take place on Sunday, June 28 via Zoom.

The lecture, ‘Naturalistic Planting on a Domestic Scale’ is an illustrated talk that will focus on practical techniques for creating and managing naturalistic plantings at a size that’s feasible for the home gardener, in terms of both labor and expense. Using part of his own garden as the example, the presenter will share failures and successes in the development, over three seasons, of a wet meadow style planting. Topics addressed will include site selection and preparation, plant material sources, choices and acquisition, installation tips, and seasonal care.

Robert Clyde Anderson found his way to the Hudson Valley after a New York City career in illustration and book design. A native of Louisiana, Robert is a lifelong gardener and has designed and maintained gardens in Columbia County as well as serving as right-hand man for eight years at the former Loomis Creek Nursery in Claverack, NY.

In 2012 Robert was hired to launch the retail division of Pondside Nursery in Hudson NY, a new garden center specializing in standard and unusual perennials, annuals, shrubs and trees as well as select pottery, tools and garden accessories. At Pondside, Robert served as Creative Director and as the buyer for perennials, annuals and hardgoods, and wrote about plants and gardening for the nursery website/newsletter. In 2017 he resigned his position to concentrate on garden design, writing, teaching and public speaking, although he remains associated with Pondside as a consultant and designer.

Robert makes his home in Stuyvesant, NY where he maintains a two acre “laboratory” garden that includes shrub borders, a sunny terraced xeric garden, a shady wooded streamside area, a moist meadow, a kitchen garden and a small flock of chickens.

Gonzales-Torres’ “Untitled” Fortune Cookie Corner – Exhibition at Hudson Hall

Hudson Hall is one of several hundred places around the world featuring a live, global installation of Untitled (Fortune Cookie Corner) by the famed artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996). The work has been lent by an anonymous private collector and coincides with Hudson Hall’s reopening to the public.

Exhibition curator Andrea Rosen, the New York gallerist, invited 1,000 individuals around the world to manifest the Gonzalez-Torres work in a place of their choosing as part of one total site. Lawyer and part-time Germantown resident John Sare was one of the 1,000 individuals selected to manifest the work, and he selected Hudson Hall for the installation. Created in 1990, the installation is described as “Fortune cookies, endless supply,” with the dimensions of each installation dependant on each site. The core tenets of the work include the principle that individuals must be permitted to choose to take fortune cookies from the work. Although the original supply of approximately 800 fortune cookies will not be replenished, the work will remain in place through July 5 even if the supply of fortune cookies is exhausted.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres was born in Guáimaro, Cuba on November 26, 1957. He referred to himself as American. He lived and worked in New York City between 1979 and 1995. Gonzalez-Torres died in Miami on January 6, 1996 from AIDS-related causes.
