The Theater Barn Celebrates its 35th season in New Lebanon

The Theater Barn, in New Lebanon, opens this Friday (June 22nd), for its 2018 season, which is it’s 35th season!  The season kicks off with the comedy “The Nerd” by Larry Shue. Following the show the audience is invited to stay for a complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres reception with the cast and crew to celebrate the 35th Season.

The 2018 season runs from Friday through the fall with plays, musicals, and the always popular Agatha Christie mystery.

2018 SCHEDULE:

June 22 through July 1- “The Nerd”
The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met but who saved his life in Vietnam—the visitor turning out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid “nerd” who outstays his welcome with a vengeance.

July 5 through July 22 – “Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap”
Murder and mayhem ensue in the world’s longest running play by the foremost mystery writer of her time.

July 25 through August 5  – “Pump Boys and Dinettes”
The ‘Pump Boys’ sell high octane on Highway 57 and the ‘Dinettes’, run the Double Cupp diner next door. With heartbreak and hilarity they fashion an evening of country western songs that received unanimous raves on and off-Broadway.

August 9 through August 19 – “She Loves Me”
Set in a 1930s European perfumery, it is considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written. She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance.

August 23 through September 2 – “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”
Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, it has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor.

September 7 through September 23 – “The Decorator”
Marcia returns to her flat to find it has not been painted. A part time painter is just beginning the work when the wife of the man with whom Marcia is having an affair arrives to tell all to her husband. Marcia hires the painter a part time actor, to impersonate her husband. Hilarity is piled upon hilarity as the painter, who takes his acting very seriously, portrays the absent husband.

Columbia County Historical Society Open For the 2018 Season

The Columbia County Historical Society’s 2018 Visitor Season officially opened over the weekend with two new exhibitions at the James Vanderpoel ‘House of History’ showcasing very special New York furniture and New York portraits from the Columbia County Historical Society’s Permanent Collection.

Caned Construction

A follow up to 2017’s ‘Study of Style Part I’, this new exhibition focuses on caning. Cane was a popular material in the early 19th century and was a less expensive alternative to solid wood or upholstered seating. The 19th-century saw rise to a new type of ‘modern’ manufacturers capitalizing on prison labor to profit city businesses. Prisons in New York, Connecticut, and Western Massachusetts employed inmates to weave caned seats, which were then sent to local cabinetmakers. Featured items in this exhibition are a rare, matched pair of 19th century caned mahogany recamiers from our permanent collection.

“Columbia County Historical Society is fortunate to have a set of recamiers (or chaise lounges). It’s highly usual for sets of furniture to stay together throughout the generations,” said CCHS Curator Anna Thompson. “The intricate cane craftsmanship that we so admire today, would have been covered with cushions during the period.”

This exhibition of New York furniture, from the CCHS Permanent Collection, is generously sponsored by Susan and Henry Livingston.

New York Portraits from the Permanent Collection

of the Columbia County Historical Society

This portrait exhibition features important Hudson Valley artists working in diverse styles, including portrait painters Ira Chaffee Goodell, Henry F. Prime, James E. Johnson, Ammi Phillips–who painted portraits of nearly a dozen of Ten Broeck and Livingston family members–as well as the Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford. This impressive exhibition includes a number of CCHS collection portraits representing some of the prominent citizens and families who helped form Columbia County.

“Columbia County Historical Society is a repository for a vital and representative collection of works that exemplify American painters seeking a style and American subjects yearning for personal perpetuity. This makes a winning exemplification,” said Historian Ruth Piwonka. “Compared with other locations in New York State and across the nation, the county’s historic portraiture is impressive, rich, and varied.”

This exhibition is generously sponsored by Abigail Hartmann Associates of Claverack and New York City; with special thanks to Brian Ruhl.

Let The Sunshine In

Juliette Binoche delivers a luminous performance in the deliciously witty, sensuously romantic new film from acclaimed director Claire Denis (White Material). Isabelle (Binoche) is a divorced Parisian painter searching for another shot at love, but refusing to settle for the parade of all-too-flawed men who drift in and out of her life. There’s a caddish banker (Xavier Beauvois) who, like many of her lovers, happens to be married; a handsome actor (Nicolas Duvauchelle) who’s working through his own hang-ups; and a sensitive fellow artist (Alex Descas) who’s skittish about commitment. What reads like a standard romantic comedy premise is transformed, in the hands of master filmmaker Denis, into something altogether deeper, more poignant, and perceptive about the profound mysteries of love.
