‘Next To Normal’ at Mac-Haydn Theatre Aug 4 – 14

The Mac-Haydn theatre presents the regional premiere of Next to Normal. August 4th to August 14th.

The Mac-Haydn theatre presents the regional premiere of Next to Normal. The show opens on Thursday, August 4th and runs through Sunday, August 14th.

Winner of 3 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for drama, Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt’s Next to Normal has taken Broadway, and the musical theater world by storm over the past decade. An emotional powerhouse of a musical with a thrilling rock score, the show takes an honest look at the sometimes harsh realities of “normal” life.

A typical American family to the outside world, the Goodmans secretly struggle in their suburban home as they deal with the effects of their mother’s worsening mental health. As they navigate their changing world, they deal with the pressing contemporary issues of trauma, loss, mental health treatment, and what it means to be a family.

Making its debut at the Mac-Haydn, Next to Normal promises to be an artistic highlight of the 2022 season and is unlike anything you have seen on our stage. Trust us when we tell you, this show is not to be missed. Prepare yourself to be overwhelmed by the raw and exhilarating reality of what it means to care for yourself, and for one another.

At the helm of the premiere production is Mac-Haydn Artistic Director John Saunders, who has earned numerous Berkshire Theatre Award nominations for his direction in recent years, as well as a win for Outstanding Production of a Musical for Ragtime (2019).

“Knowing that Next To Normal has not been really seen in the region, it feels like a tremendous honor to be presenting the show,” said Saunders. “While some may not consider it “Summer Stock” fare, I believe the show magically does what theatre is intended to do; it holds up a mirror for the viewer and offers an incredibly truthful look at a real family facing very real issues. Though the material is, at times, heavy, the show is written so beautifully to encompass great moments of levity, humor, and above all else, hope.”

Saunders is joined by Music Director Eric Shorey and Assistant Music Director Emily Croome. The production will feature scenic design by Emma Cummings, who will bring the Goodmans’ home to life on the Mac-Haydn stage, along with lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Bethany Marx, sound design by Nick Caburis, wig design by Caitlin Maxwell, hair and makeup design by April Gerbode, and props design by David Tankersley, who will also assist Cummings.

Broadway’s Beth Kirkpatrick (Les Miserables, Hello Dolly) makes her Mac-Haydn debut as Diana. She is joined by Eric Van Tielen (Broadway: Les Miserables, A Tale of Two Cities) as Dan. Rounding out the cast are Mac-Haydn favorites Amber Mawande-Spytek (Pippin) as Natalie, Kylan Ross (Pippin, Urinetown) as Gabe, Andrew Burton Kelley (Little Shop of Horrors, She Loves Me) as Henry, and Gabe Belyeu (Man of La Mancha, A Chorus Line) as Dr. Madden.

“My goal is to really surprise our audience with this extraordinary piece and tell them a story that is even more relatable than some of the good old classic musicals,” said Saunders. “The score is both contemporary and classic at the same time which I know our audiences will enjoy tremendously and I just know the Mac-Haydn audiences will genuinely appreciate their experience with the show.”

Up next at the Mac-Haydn theatre is Kiss Me, Kate. The show opens on Thursday, July 21 and runs through Sunday, July 31.

The sophisticated, romantic and delightfully hilarious Broadway classic that earned the very first Tony award for Best Musical. Kiss Me, Kate combines the irreverent humor of four brilliant writers: Sam and Bella Spewack, Cole Porter and William Shakespeare.

The battle of the sexes takes center stage as former spouses feud onstage and off during a musical presentation of The Taming of the Shrew. Egotistical leading man, director, and producer Fred Graham and his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi profess to hate each other. However, it soon becomes clear that their relationship is a little more complicated. Throw in some cases of mistaken identity and a few legendary comedic routines and you get Kiss Me, Kate.

Returning to the Mac-Haydn for the first time in 10 years, this production of Kiss Me, Kate is sure to be a blockbuster addition to the 2022 season. You will hear the Mac-Haydn musicians at their absolute best in this timeless score which features hits like “Another Op’nin’, Another Show”; “Always True To You In My Fashion” and “It’s Too Darn Hot”. Cole Porter’s exceptional musical will burst off the stage in our intimate setting and promises to leave you feeling so in love.

Mac-Haydn Theatre Presents Urinetown, Jul 7 – 17

After the successful season opening run of A Chorus Line, the Mac-Haydn Summer 2022 Season continues with Urinetown, July 7 through July 17.

After the successful season opening run of A Chorus Line, the Mac-Haydn Summer 2022 Season continues with Urinetown, July 7 through July 17.

A side splitting sendup of greed, love, revolution and musical theater itself. Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is hilariously funny, remarkably irreverent and touchingly sincere. The winner of 3 Tony Awards and 2 Obie Awards, this incredible satire leaves no one safe from scrutiny as it surveys societies established norms and foundational institutions.

A dire water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens of Urinetown are forced to pay a single malevolent company to use the only available amenities. One citizen of Urinetown decides that they’ve had enough. They plan a revolution to break the chain and lead the people to freedom!

Originally planned for our 2020 season, this production of Urinetown is two years in the making, finally hitting our stage for the first time ever. You are sure to love the ardent characters of this irreverent satire. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the modern era. It’s outrageous, unscrupulous and absolutely hilarious!

Trey Compton makes his Mac-Haydn directorial debut after previously directing with The Fulton, Riverside, Engeman, Sierra Repertory, The Herb Strauss, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, Millbrook Playhouse, and most recently at Cortland Repertory Theatre. Compton is joined by seasoned Mac-Haydn choreographer Elizabeth McGuire, whose previous credits in Chatham include “Camelot” (2019) and “Pippin” (2021).

“I’m so very thrilled Urinetown will be shared with audiences at Mac-Haydn,” said Compton. “The show is musical theatre satire at its best. It brilliantly walks the line between thought provoking, affecting theatre and ‘pee your pants funny’ musical comedy (pun very much intended).”

Broadway’s George Dvorsky returns to the Mac-Haydn stage as Caldwell B. Cladwell. Dvorsky’s past roles with the theatre include Mushnik in the 2019 production of “Little Shop of Horrors” and his Berkshire Theatre Award-winning performance as Warbucks in 2018’s “Annie.”

Dvorsky is joined by newcomer Janet Dickinson as the menacing Penelope Pennywise. Dickinson is no stranger to the stage, having appeared regionally and on Broadway in shows including “Anastasia the Musical,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “Happiness” at Lincoln Center.

The “Urinetown” cast features Kylan Ross as Bobby Strong, Gabe Belyeu as Officer Lockstock, Nina Laing as Hope Cladwell, and Sarah Chiu as Little Sally.
