Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association Star Party, Jan 15

The Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association is throwing a star-gazing party at Lake Taghkanic State Park, on Friday, January 15.

Enjoy the night sky away from the bright lights of the towns and cities in our area! The night will be dark – perfect for star gazing. Bring your own telescopes and binoculars or use those provided by our members. A telescope is not required.

Telescope operators arrive about 30 minutes early to set up. Observing begins about an hour after sunset and will probably end around 11, or whenever club members decide. All will take place at the park’s West Beach parking lot.

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR MASKS AND MAINTAIN 6 FEET OF DISTANCE FROM OTHERS. The number of people will be limited to 50 in one group. The lot where we meet is large enough for two groups if needed.

Dress warmly and consider bringing extra layers in case you get colder as the night goes on.

Stargazing – The Perseids Meteor Shower

The annual Perseids Meteor Shower, which runs from July 17 to August 24, is typically one of the best of the year, and can produce anywhere from 60 to 100 meteors an hour at its peak. The meteors, which are mostly the size of raisons, are historically bright and produce great streaks through the sky. This year’s shower peak will be even more visible because a thin crescent moon should make for dark skies.

The Perseids are produced by the comet, Swift-Tuttle, which was independently discovered by Lewis Swift on July 16, 1862 and by Horace Parnell Tuttle on July 19, 1862. The meteors fall between the constellations Perseus and Cassiopeia, but just look up and you should be able to see them from anywhere in the sky.

DATES:
Peak – August 12-13, 2018
