library-of-congress-mobile

The Library of Congress’ mobile museum, “Gateway to Knowledge”, will be setting up in Pittsfield in time for the city’s Third Thursday celebration from 5 to 9pm tomorrow.

This mobile museum is housed in an 18-wheeler that expands to three times its width. Inside the truck, visitors will find museum-style exhibits and multimedia displays, including facsimiles of many of the Library’s most prized treasures. Those facsimiles include the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence, the 1507 Waldseemüller Map (the first document to use the word “America”), the 1455 Gutenberg Bible, the 1962 drawings for the comic book that introduced Spider-Man to the world and  Walt Whitman’s poem “Leaves of Grass.”

The Berkshire Museum’s Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees at the Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield, MA, is a holiday tradition, celebrating it’s 25th year. What started as a week-long event with a few trees is now a seasonal event featuring more than 200 decorated trees on display.

Pittsfield Green Gathering

A group called Pittsfield Green Drinks gathers together once a month to discuss environmental issues over a pint or two. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:15 p.m. in the Pittsfield Brew Works on Depot Street in Pittsfield, MA. No reservations are required, and there is no fee.

These events were started and are co-sponsored by the Center for Ecological Technology and the Berkshire Environmental Team (BEAT). Although the local Green Drinks is independent, it is loosely affiliated with an international network of similar gatherings (www.greendrinks.org) around the planet.

Each gathering is informal and no agendas are planned with topics coming up among the group. Those topics range from land-use and preservation, to recycling, solar power and other forms of alternative energy, to green building methods, pollution and other topics concerning the environment and sustainable living.

Albany Symphony Orchestra: Memories of the Old Country

7:30pm $27, 3 Concert Series $77

The centerpiece of the December concert is a Klezmer Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra, written by Williamstown composer Stephen Dankner for the brilliant Israeli-American virtuoso, Matt Haimovitz. Matt gained particular attention for his multi-year solo recital tour in unconventional venues, bringing concert music to new listeners (in roadhouses, bars, pizza parlors, etc…). For this work, Dankner imagines the orchestra as a giant Klezmer Band, and pays homage to his own and Haimovitz’s Jewish ancestry. Also on the program, Haimovitz performs Shostakovich’s achingly beautiful Cello Concerto No. 1, and the orchestra performs Bartok’s Rumanian Folk Dances and the Schubert “Unfinished” Symphony.
