Take a Virtual Tour of Historic Hudson, without leaving your home, this Thursday, July 2.

Take a Tour of Historic Hudson, without leaving your home, this Thursday, July 2.

The City of Hudson is much more than a quaint town in the Hudson River Valley. Founded by Quakers in 1785, Hudson quickly grew to a major commercial center and almost became the capital of New York State. Hudson offers the finest “Main Street” in New York and features examples of every architectural style since the late 18th century, including two of the rarest, Adam and Egyptian Revival.

Big Onion Walking Tours‘ virtual adventure will explore the diverse social history, architecture, and people of this Upstate urban center. Stops could include: Promenade Hill, Nantucket Houses, sites associated with the Underground Railroad, the most notorious Red Light district north of Times Square, and locations associated with The Jenkins Family, Ma Brown, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jack “Legs” Diamond, Ada Louise Huxtable, and Lieutenant William H. Allen, who was killed by pirates.

Gonzales-Torres’ “Untitled” Fortune Cookie Corner – Exhibition at Hudson Hall

Hudson Hall is one of several hundred places around the world featuring a live, global installation of Untitled (Fortune Cookie Corner) by the famed artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996).

Hudson Hall is one of several hundred places around the world featuring a live, global installation of Untitled (Fortune Cookie Corner) by the famed artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996). The work has been lent by an anonymous private collector and coincides with Hudson Hall’s reopening to the public.

Exhibition curator Andrea Rosen, the New York gallerist, invited 1,000 individuals around the world to manifest the Gonzalez-Torres work in a place of their choosing as part of one total site. Lawyer and part-time Germantown resident John Sare was one of the 1,000 individuals selected to manifest the work, and he selected Hudson Hall for the installation. Created in 1990, the installation is described as “Fortune cookies, endless supply,” with the dimensions of each installation dependant on each site. The core tenets of the work include the principle that individuals must be permitted to choose to take fortune cookies from the work. Although the original supply of approximately 800 fortune cookies will not be replenished, the work will remain in place through July 5 even if the supply of fortune cookies is exhausted.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres was born in Guáimaro, Cuba on November 26, 1957. He referred to himself as American. He lived and worked in New York City between 1979 and 1995. Gonzalez-Torres died in Miami on January 6, 1996 from AIDS-related causes.

The Hudson Tourism Board has launched “Project Hudson,” a program to promote Hudson as an attractive destination while strengthening our local communities and economy. The Hudson Tourism Board is welcoming proposals for short, and long-term projects that promote Hudson as an attractive destination and strengthen our local businesses, business associations, and cultural organizations

Businesses and organizations, based in the city of Hudson, are invited to fill out the application online or by hand. The board will consider applications that:

  • Take place in the City of Hudson.
  • Enliven Hudson’s city life.
  • Illuminate or create a unique experience of Hudson’s communities and businesses.
  • Create local opportunities for recreation and/or promotion, and/or seek to advance walkability.
  • Create local opportunities for climate resiliency, where applicable.
  • Are accessible to all audiences and ADA compliant, where applicable.
  • Use “tactical urbanism,” which encourages low cost, impermanent, and DIY projects, where applicable.

The Tourism Board is tasked with using its funds to promote our city. With Project Hudson, the board hopes to take small steps toward supporting the creativity, ingenuity, and civic-mindedness of Hudsonians to create a more vibrant, healthy, equitable, and safe place to live and to be.

This grant program is being administered with the help and support of the Columbia Economic Development Corporation.
