Like many of us, Art Omi has watched the spread of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic with deep concern. Effective last week, Art Omi has suspended all public events and classes until further notice. The Benenson Center will be closed as of March 13 until further notice.

Visitors will be welcome in the Sculpture & Architecture Park. Visitors are encouraged to observe a safe distance from others when visiting the park, and to adhere to other practices that prevent the spread of the contagion.

An official post on Art Omi’s FaceBook page included “We would like to note that we have arrived at this decision not due to any specific incidence of infection within Art Omi’s known community. We are acting out of consideration of the health of staff and visitors, and providing a safe place to work and visit. Beyond that, Art Omi understands the ripple impact that maintaining business as usual could have, and comes to the decision that it is the organization’s utmost responsibility to do everything within our ability to help stem the spread of the virus’.

As of now, there is no specific date for the resumption of regular activities, but Art Omi is evaluating various factors on an ongoing basis. Notification of reopening and other updates will be posted to Art Omi’s website, and social media channels.

With so much misinformation and rumors running rampant about COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) finding accurate information can be difficult. One great source for reliable updates is the Columbia County Department of Health.

The Columbia County Department of Health is actively monitoring for potential cases of COVID-19, and is taking precautions to limit the impact if the virus is found in Columbia County.

Visit www.columbiacountynyhealth.com for updates like the following one from March 14, 2020:

The Columbia County Health Department would like to thank you for your patience in waiting for updates.  The rapidly changing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and NYSDOH about COVID-19 requires continued monitoring and adapting of our plans for response.

As of this release, there are no positive cases of COVID-19 in Columbia County. The risk for potential cases in Columbia County remains low.  The public will be notified in the event of a positive case in Columbia County.

It is recommended that we avoid person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 by staying vigilant in practicing respiratory virus protection measures:

-Avoid large crowds

-Post-pone any events or travel that you can

-Practice proper hand hygiene

-Cover your cough and sneeze into your elbow crease

-Avoid touching your face

-Stay home when you’re sick

At the time of this release CCDOH does not have testing capability. We will make every effort to update this information as soon as it becomes available. We do not have the hand sanitizer the Governor spoke about and as is the case we will let the public know as soon as we have any information.

To help with answers for your question or concerns about the coronavirus and how to help stop the spread, we suggest you seek reliable and credible information. Along with our updates the CCDOH web page at www.columbiacountynyhealth.com also has links to the WHO, CDC and NYSDOH web sites.
