The Columbia County Historical Society is hosting an evening fundraiser gala titled, “First Columbians 2018”. The event will celebrate Columbia County towns, villages, hamlets, and the City of Hudson. This ticketed fundraiser will include live music by the Nat Phipps Trio, as well as a silent and live auction.

The Columbia County Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture with Dr. James Mundy, the Vassar Museum Director. The lecture is titled, “What Can You Give Me for Seven Dollars?” ~ Building the Founding Collection of Hudson River School Art at Vassar College.

The Columbia County Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture with Dr. James Mundy, the Vassar Museum Director. The lecture is titled, “What Can You Give Me for Seven Dollars?” ~ Building the Founding Collection of Hudson River School Art at Vassar College.

The Vassar College Collections & Hudson River School Paintings (1825-1875) are the theme of this April lecture sponsored by the Columbia County Historical Society.

Dr. James Mundy is a graduate of Vassar College, returned to campus in 1991 to become the first Anne Hendricks Bass Director of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University and has held teaching positions at Northwestern University and Mount Holyoke College. From 1986-91 he was the chief curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum. He has published and organized exhibitions on many diverse topics from Italian Renaissance art to American art and the history of photography,

Historical Lecture ‘Barns of the Hudson Valley’ by Ted Hilscher

The Columbia County Historical Society presents the illustrated lecture ‘Barns of the Hudson Valley’ by Ted Hilscher.

What is the difference between English Barns and Dutch Barns? Hilscher will give an overview of local barns in the Hudson Valley, mostly in Columbia and Greene Counties.

Ted Hilscher is New Baltimore Town Historian and a professor of American History at Columbia Greene Community College.

The Columbia County Historical Society and Historic Hudson present the lecture “A Dutch Approach to Historic Preservation” Preserving ‘Spirit of Place’ by Andre Hoek.

The Columbia County Historical Society and Historic Hudson present the lecture “A Dutch Approach to Historic Preservation” Preserving ‘Spirit of Place’ by Andre Hoek.

Dutch restoration architect, Andre Hoek will speak about the techniques and tools developed in the Netherlands to survey, study, restore, protect and maintain historic buildings and gardens. He will discuss whether these methods can apply to historic buildings, especially those of Dutch origin, in the Hudson Valley.

Mr. Hoek will examine projects large and small, building archeological methods, sustainability, and non-invasive energy saving solutions.

CCHS “Early Colonial New York Piano Makers,” Lecture Rescheduled

The following event was originally scheduled for Tuesday (March 13, 2018), but thanks to Nor’Easter #3, it was postponed. The new date is Monday, March 19.

The Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS) Volunteers present: “Early Colonial New York Piano Makers,” an illustrated lecture by piano conservator and historian, Wally Stock. The lecture will include makers in Albany, Troy and Nassau during the period from 1830’s through the 1890’s.

Originally from Malden Bridge in Chatham, Wally Stock’s ancestors were some of the early Dutch settlers of Albany. Mr. Stock taught a course in 1991 on the ‘History and Development of the Piano’ at the New York State Museum. He services and restores antique pianos and pianos of all makes at his business, Stock Piano Services, founded in 1973.

Prior to the public program, the CCHS Volunteers will hold a brief meeting at 6:30pm.  New volunteers are always welcome and training is provided. Volunteer opportunities exist in many of CCHS’s operations, including at the c.1819 James Vanderpoel House, the 1737 Luykas Van Alen House, the c.1850 Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse, and the CCHS Museum & Library. Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to attend the meeting and can check the CCHS Volunteers web page for more information: cchsny.org/volunteer.
