The next Bi-Weekly meeting of the American Constitution Discussion Group meets Monday, September 19, 2016, at the New Lebanon Library.

Join Constitution enthusiast Paul Engel for a bi-weekly discussion group focusing on the study of the American Constitution. Interested participants should bring their questions and be ready to share their opinions.  Along with the Constitution, Paul Engel has studied the Federalist Papers, the Anti-Federalist Papers, and numerous books and articles on the topic. His plan is to focus on the actual words of the Constitution and, in doing so, to help build a better understanding of what founded this country.

The group will meet at the library, from 7pm to 9pm. It is free and open to the public.

Super Mario Bros. Corn Maze at New York Farm

Every year since 2005, Stoughton Farm, in Newark Valley, NY, has created a uniquely themed corn maze. This year, the theme is Super Mario Bros., the popular Nintendo video game.

The maze covers nearly eight acres, and took several weeks, plus a lot of math to build. The Stoughton family and their maze were recently featured in an ABC News article, where Tim Stoughton said, “We lay it out into grids and then go in and take the corn out where the pathways should be,” said Stoughton. “We do it when you can still see over the corn, before it gets too tall.”6a50ff_27d1f714ff1c419faeb2c713423b9543

Stoughton Farm is a greenhouse, roadside farm market, and “MAiZE” site located in Newark Valley, New York, which is near Ithaca. The Super Mario Bros., Maze opens on Saturday, September 17. Additional attractions include a 9ft tube slide, a spider web for the youngsters, pumpkin checkers, duck races, and dozens of photo ops. On the weekends, the farm also has a corn cannon, pumpkin blaster, cow train rides, and hayrides.

There’s also a food truck with Homemade French Fries!

Columbia County Residential Broadband Survey Available

Connect Columbia wants to hear from county residents (and businesses) about our current internet connectivity experiences. The information that they gather will be used to help identify areas of the county that need better and faster access to the internet.

Connect Columbia, a Community Action Citizens Group, has created a short and simple online survey that all residents can take. The data collected from the survey will help the group and the county’s broadband subcommittee to learn more about area internet service providers and their actual coverage areas. The ultimate goal of the group and subcommittee is to improve internet service across Columbia County.

The residential survey gives respondents the option of entering their street address. While your address is not required to fill out the survey, entering a street address will help the group’s overall mapping results. I filled out the survey, and it took about 2 minutes to complete.

Tunstull – From Fashion to Fine Art: The Tunstull Art Odyssey

tunstull_cover
Columbia County authors (and friends of mine), Glenn Tunstull and Jelani Bandele, are the collaborative team behind a new book titled, Tunstull – From Fashion to Fine Art: The Tunstull Art Odyssey. The book tells the story of Glenn Tunstull’s journey from fashion illustrator to fine artist, and uses Tunstull’s artwork to accompany the text.

From the book’s Amazon page,

“This telling story captures Tunstull’s creative growth and accomplishments through racial barriers and societal limitations in the U.S. and abroad, his move to Africa and Europe to explore creative opportunities in concert with his former partner, fine artist Toyce Anderson, his subsequent return to the US as an international artist struggling to regain his footing in his original career, and his pivot to teaching, and eventually fine art, as a world traveler. The stunning visuals highlight Tunstull’s creations for such iconic titles as Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue, W and Playbill, celebrated designers such as Joseph Abboud, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Nicole Miller, and renowned retailers such as Henri Bendel, Blooomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus, as well as his exploration as a fine artist, from representational watercolors and oils to abstracts. From cover to cover readers will enjoy Tunstull’s exciting journey and follow every step of his creative life.”

Official Launch Date: Monday, October 3, 2016
