Ted Hilscher, Claverack native; New Baltimore Town Historian; and U.S. History Teacher at Columbia-Greene Community College, will present a slide show titled Barns of the Hudson Valley. He will discuss the Dutch and English traditions, the differences between Dutch and English barns, the other kinds of outbuildings found on a typical small family farm, and the tasks performed by the farmers in their barns and outbuildings.

The Riders Mills Schoolhouse was built in the late 1790s, and it is one of our nation’s oldest public school buildings still in existence. It was also one of America’s last single-room schoolhouses in operation; classes were held every school year until its closing in 1953. It was acquired by the Riders Mills Historical Association in 1966 and is listed on both the State and National Registry of Historic Sites.

Hudson Area Library History Room and the Hendrick Hudson Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution present “The History of the Robert Jenkins House, a home in Hudson: A Tour & Talk” by Jeane La Porta.

Hudson Area Library History Room and the Hendrick Hudson Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution present “The History of the Robert Jenkins House, a home in Hudson: A Tour & Talk” by Jeane La Porta.

This program is a rare opportunity to tour and learn about the history of the Federal Style house at 113 Warren Street, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Robert Jenkins House has been owned by the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) since 1900. The house was built in 1811 by Robert Jenkins, son of one of the original Proprietors of the City of Hudson, who went on to serve as third and fifth mayor of Hudson.

Jeane La Porta, Regent of the Hudson Chapter DAR and Town of Claverack Historian, will give background information on the history of the DAR, including the Hendrick Hudson Chapter, as well as, Claverack Landing and the founding of the city of Hudson as a prelude to a discussion of the construction and history of the 206 year old house that the chapter calls home. The program will include visuals and many photographs will give the audience a rare peek into areas that are not open to the public. The Greenport Garden Club will be providing flower arrangements throughout the house for this special spring tour.

The Hendrick Hudson Chapter, NSDAR, maintains the Robert Jenkins House Genealogical, Research, and History Reading Room, which contains a growing collection of Columbia County and regional genealogy, and the Robert Jenkins House Historical Collection as a repository for memorabilia relating to the history of the area, the city of Hudson and the whaling industry.
