Welcome to J.P. Prescott’s Traveling Medicine Show—a modern take on the old-time traveling tent shows of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Your Master of Ceremonies, Professor J.P. Prescott III, has traveled the globe in search of just the right ingredients to fuse with his patented, pure graded, 100% American rattlesnake oil. Along the way, he has encountered some of the most amazing performers the world has ever known and has assembled them all in one show, for just one night, under one big tent. So find yourself a seat, you are in for a treat. You have made it to the Medicine Show. J.P. Prescott‘s Traveling Medicine Show stars Mike Wartella as J.P. Prescott with performances by: Gina Coleman, The Picky Bastards, Rosebud Red and Opal Raven Cirque of Gypsy Layne, Comedian Juggler Dan Foley, The Magical Comedy of Peter Gross and Serotonin Flow Performance Art. All with the backing of our house band for the evening, the Rev Tor Band.

The Colonial Theatre’s ‘Outside Under the Tent’ productions are held under an open-air tent in The Colonial Theatre parking lot. Seating is General Admission and based on party size and social distancing protocols.

The Hudson Area Library  is hosting a Book Signing & Author Talk with Big Black: Stand at Attica co-author, Jared Reinmuth, on Saturday, September 18th at 12:30.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Attica Prison Rebellion of 1971, Jared Reinmuth will visit the Hudson Area Library to discuss Big Black: Stand at Attica, an Eisner nominated graphic novel memoir from Frank “Big Black” Smith, who was a prisoner at Attica State Prison in 1971.

In the summer of 1971, New York’s Attica State Prison is a symbol of everything broken in America – abused prisoners, rampant racism and a blind eye turned towards the injustices perpetrated on the powerless. But when the guards at Attica overreact to a minor incident, the prisoners decide they’ve had enough – and revolt against their jailers, taking them hostage and making demands for humane conditions. Frank “Big Black” Smith finds himself at the center of this uprising, struggling to protect hostages, prisoners and negotiators alike. But when the only avenue for justice seems to be negotiating with ambitious Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Big Black soon discovers there may be no hope in finding a peaceful resolution for the prisoners in Attica.

Written by Jared Reinmuth and Frank “Big Black” Smith himself, adapted and illustrated by Ameziane, Big Black: Stand At Attica is an unflinching look at the price of standing up to injustice in what remains one of the bloodiest civil rights confrontations in American history.

This talk is part of A Love Supreme: Celebrating the Legacy of Alice & John Coltrane, a series of concerts curated by Cat Henry.

GRAMMY award-winning music historian Ashley Kahn, author of A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album and other popular books, delivers a presentation focusing on the lives and music of John and Alice Coltrane. Balancing musical insight with fascinating stories, Kahn will bring their careers into a modern-day perspective—discussing the musical influences and spiritual devotion they shared, even as their music proved so influential, enduring, and vastly different.

When pianist Alice Coltrane—nee McLeod—launched her professional career in 1960, moving from Detroit to Paris, jazz was primarily a man’s game; in many ways, it still is. Before that decade was over, she married the leading saxophonist of the day, then became mother to four children, a widow, a multi-instrumentalist (adding harp and organ to her repertoire) and a recording artist who fused jazz and church music with Indian ragas and devotional songs. By the 1970s, even as she pursued her role as parental and recording artist, she established a Vedic ashram in southern California and became spiritual leader to a flock of devotees. Kahn’s discussion will deal directly with how best to understand and fully appreciate this remarkable African American woman, and her continuing influence on so many musicians today.

More than 50 years after his death at the age of 40, John Coltrane is still one of the most celebrated musical heroes of the 20th Century. His sound is often imitated, and today stands for the ideals of musical freedom, personal expression, and spiritual priority. Yet, the theme and significance of what Coltrane sought to convey through his music, especially in his 1964 four-part suite A Love Supreme, is more celebrated than understood. How did Coltrane weave his spiritual focus into his music? What was his message, and why does it remain relevant, along with his music, today?

Celebrate Art Omi’s  Fall Opening in the Park on September 11. With opening receptions for To Feel Myself Beloved on the Earth, by Jeffrey Gibson, and TunnelTeller, by Alicja Kwade, now on view in the Sculpture & Architecture Park. The opening features a performance by Black Belt Eagle Scout at 5 pm. 

To Feel Myself Beloved on the Earth is an exhibition of quilts, garments, drums, prints, and video by Jeffrey Gibson. A Choctaw-Cherokee artist, Gibson best known for his abstract painting, sculpture and prints which carry an autobiographical cultural inflection. 

Based in Berlin, Alicja Kwade (b.1979, Poland) has long been engaged with value systems, philosophical questions about the essence of reality, and with attempting to examine, if not resolve, issues of inherently subjective concepts such as space and time. In her sculptures, installations, photographs, and films, Kwade probes the structural properties of everyday objects and the veracity of matter.
