Author Ed Maurer at New Lebanon Library

This Thursday (September 1) at New Lebanon Library, Berkshire author Ed Maurer will read from his family memoir Survive & Escape: One Family Chooses Life. The reading will be followed by Q & A and discussion, after which Mr. Maurer will sign copies of his book.

From New Lebanon Library:

“Maurer’s book is the story of his family’s choice for survival and escape from Europe beginning in 1926 when worldwide financial woes, populist discontent and rumors of war generated anxiety and fear. Maurer’s uncle led the way, holding the door open and providing U.S. sponsorship for the others to follow. It is also the story of those left behind as late as 1939, following Germany’s takeover of Austria, when another of Maurer’s uncles was imprisoned in Dachau, then Buchenwald. Maurer’s family was on the run in Fascist Italy and escaped just days after Germany’s policy of “deportation” became “The Final Solution.”

Over the past 50 years Ed Maurer has been a teacher, writer, trainer in the business sector, management consultant, and a mediator. He assisted New York City Community College in launching the College Discovery Program, which prepared inner-city youth for college level demands, and helped establish the Center for Humanistic Education, a teacher training center that introduced innovation to the teaching process. After relocating to the Berkshires in the 1970s, Maurer co-created the South Berkshire Educational Collaborative.”
