In person craft meetups are back at the the New Lebanon Library! This month’s adult-level crafting class, ‘Make It & Take It’, will teach you how to make greeting cards out of napkins. Have you ever wondered what to do with leftover decorative paper napkins? Join this crafty group and learn how to turn them into lovely greeting cards! All materials provided. 

Space is  limited, and registration is required.

HRC Showcase Theatre is presenting a Staged Reading of ‘For The People’ by Carol Mullen, at The Theater Barn, in New Lebanon, on Saturday, May 7th.

For The People is the fictional story of Pittsburgh city councilwoman Meg Cabot, the first openly lesbian elected official in Pennsylvania who, after a vicious hate crime, is suddenly thrust onto the national political stage. With her hard-charging chief of staff steering her towards a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Meg must decide how far she will go to advance her career and what she is (and isn’t) willing to sacrifice to be both a successful politician and a good person.

Pittsburgh playwright Carol Mullen has had works produced by theaters and festivals including the Kick It! Festival (NYC); Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project; NativeAliens Theater Collective (NYC); Outvisible Theatre (Detroit); OutWorks Festival (Louisiana State University); the Pittsburgh New Works Festival; Shelterbelt Theater (Omaha); Stage Q (Madison); WingSpace Theater (Ithaca); The Women’s Theatre Project (Ft. Lauderdale); 10 x 10 in the Triangle (Carrboro); and, Off-Off Broadway at Emerging Artists Theater and Blue Pearl Theatrics. She has an MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts and is a member of the Dramatists Guild. In 2021 For The People was selected as a Finalist by the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, a singular honor.

Artistic Director Barbara Waldinger will direct the cast which includes Raya Malcolm, KD McTeigue, Molly Parker Myers, Shannon Rafferty and Leigh Strimbeck. After the reading there will be a talkback featuring the playwright, director, and cast members.

A Shayna Maidel (“My Pretty Girl”) Presented by Two Of Us Productions

The Two Of Us Productions,  the award winning theater company based in Columbia County NY, continues their return to live in-person theater with A Shayna Maidel, the Obie and Outer Critics Circle award winning drama by Barbara Lebow.

Presented in the intimate Marylin and Bob Laurie Foundation Gallery at the Claverack Free Library in Claverack, you don’t want to miss this exploration of human strength and frailty punctuated by moments of humor & hope. 

A Shayna Maidel, Yiddish meaning “pretty girl,” tells the story of the reunion of two sisters after World War II, one having survived the Nazi concentration camps. A Shayna Maidel is a memory play in that it is set in three times: when Mordechai Weiss is born in 1876, when his two daughters (Rose White and Lusia Weiss Pechenik) are reunited in New York City during the present (1946), and when Lusia has flashbacks of her life in Poland immediately before and after the Holocaust. 

A Shayna Maidel features Karissa Payson as Rose White, John Leiunug as Morcechai Weiss, Constance Lopez as Lusia Weiss Pechenik, Sorelle Brauth as Mama (Liba Eisenman Weiss), Cathy Hunt-Wheelock as Hanna and Mark Leinung as Duvid Pechenik. The Gallery at the newly renovated Claverack Free Library provides an intimate performance space that brings the audience into this gripping family drama. 

The Claverack Free Library requires masking for these performances. Masks are available for those that need them. 

The Two Of Us Productions is well known throughout the Hudson Valley for presenting quality theater, both musicals and dramas. Their recent productions of Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, Young Frankenstein, Deathtrap, Chicago, Les Miserables, next to normal, Mamma Mia! and Jesus Christ Superstar were all recognized by the Theatre Association of NYS with multiple awards, including outstanding work by the company outstanding performance by the orchestra. Reviews of their recent virtual live-staged readings of three Arthur Miller scripts; All My Sons, Broken Glass, and an adaption of An Enemy Of The People will appear in upcoming editions of The Arthur Miller Journal.

Have a toaster that won’t toast? Bike with a flat tire? Necklace that needs a new clasp? Start gathering your beloved but broken items, and get ready for the CHATHAM REPAIR CAFE on May 14th 10-2 at the Chatham Firehouse!

Repair Cafes are free, fun, community events where local volunteer “fixers” help their neighbors repair broken household items and keep them out of the landfill! Hosted by local Climate Smart Communities (Chatham, New Lebanon, Austerlitz, Village of East Nassau).
