Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night Returns to Art Omi, Dec 12

unnamed

Art Omi welcomes back Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night, a participatory electronic soundscape celebrated worldwide every December since 1992. This landmark work of avant-garde public art takes place in more than 130 cities across the United States, Canada, Europe and New Zealand, activating city streets, parks, and landscapes with “a shimmering sound-wall of bells and chimes that is dreamlike to wander through in the December nip” (The Village Voice).

This year’s event will be strictly capped at 50 participants, and all participants must register in advance hereParticipants are required to wear a mask at all times, and to maintain appropriate distance from those who are not members of their household. Please note that no indoor access will be permitted during the event, and so participants should dress appropriately for un-paved winter conditions. Personal illumination devices, such as headlamps, are strongly recommended.

An original composition by Phil Kline, Unsilent Night was written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December, always as a free event. It takes the form of a promenade in which the audience becomes the performer, walking a carefully chosen route together. Led by composer Phil Kline, participants will gather at Art Omi’s Benenson Center, and then proceed on a route through the park. A selection of Kline’s own boomboxes will be available to borrow on a first-come first-served basis.

Participants are encouraged to bring a mobile phone/media player with external speakers (pre-loaded with the Unsilent Night app or one of the four audio tracks—see unsilentnight.com/participate)—or boombox with functioning tape deck.

A live webstream of Unsilent Night will be made possible by Wave Farm’s Transmit Partner Program by clicking here. Tune in from New York’s Upper Hudson Valley or from around the globe at wavefarm.org/listen and on the Wave Farm Radio App (iOS).

Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night in Hudson, Dec 22

In partnership with Wave Farm, Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night returns to Hudson for the third year.

Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music in the form of a cassette, CD, or Mp3. Together all four tracks comprise Unsilent Night. The fact that the participants play different “parts” simultaneously helps create the special sound of the piece. Participants carry boomboxes, or anything that amplifies music, and simultaneously start playing the music. They then walk a carefully chosen route through their city’s streets, creating a unique mobile sound sculpture which is different from every listener’s perspective.

Led by Phil Kline himself, participants will gather at WGXC’s Hudson Studio (369 Warren Street) inside the First Presbyterian Church. Participants can expect a route that engages Hudson’s lesser traveled alleys and enclaves, and to come away with a new experience of the city’s historic streetscape. All are invited to participate. Plan to arrive at the 4th Street entrance of the church no later than 6:45 p.m. with a boombox or smartphone with external speakers. If you plan to use a smartphone, visit unsilentnight.com/participate before the event to download a track or the Unsilent Night app.
