All of the proceeds go directly to support preservation, conservation, and archiving of the library’s remarkable local history collection.”

The two maps for sale have been meticulously cleaned and restored prior to being reproduced using an archival inkjet process. Both are available in unframed prints on heavy matte and the 1923 image is also available framed. The maps represent a popular cartographic form used to depict American towns in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known also as bird’s-eye views, perspective maps and aero views, they are non-photographic representations of towns portrayed as if viewed from above at an angle, not generally drawn to scale, and showing street layouts, individual buildings and landscape features, in perspective.

The Hudson Area Library History Room houses a special collection that pertains to the history of the City of Hudson, Greenport and Stockport; as well as Columbia County and New York State. The History Room also hosts the Local History Speaker Series at the library, offering free monthly talks on diverse topics related to the history of Hudson, Greenport, Stockport, and Columbia County.

The History Room hours are Tuesdays 4 – 6pm and Saturdays 10am – 12pm, during which people visit and browse the extensive collection of city directories, yearbooks and local history books; and research items in the archival collection. Screenshot-2018-10-31-22.17.44

This Sunday, the Claverack Free Library is hosting a lecture titled, “The Hudson River Valley in the American Revolution, Fortress West Point, & the Great Chain”.

COL. Jim Johnson, in the uniform of the 5th NY Regiment, will be speaking about Washington’s “key of America”–Fortress West Point on the Hudson River. As the center of the colonies at the time of the American Revolution, the Hudson River Valley provided a nexus for the conflict and hosted many key figures, battles – Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton, and political events throughout the eight years of war.  The American Revolution played out along the Hudson’s banks – from the first riots protesting the British Quartering Act on Golden Hill in Lower Manhattan, to the chaining of the Hudson and Benedict Arnold’s attempted betrayal of West Point in the Highlands in 1780, to the Battles of Saratoga along its northern shores where Arnold played the role not of traitor, but of hero. The Hudson River Valley was essential to the birth of our Nation.

Columbia County Historical Society Lecture: “The Bicentennial History of the Town of Austerlitz,”, Oct 16

The Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS) Volunteers present “The Bicentennial History of the Town of Austerlitz,” a free illustrated lecture by Town of Austerlitz historian, Thomas H. Moreland.

As Austerlitz celebrates its bicentennial this year, the Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS) Volunteers present “The Bicentennial History of the Town of Austerlitz,” a free illustrated lecture by Town of Austerlitz historian, Thomas H. Moreland, on October 16.

Established in 1818, Austerlitz has a rich history. Moreland will discuss The Indian Deed of 1756, the first settlers and settlements, the Spencertown Proprietorship (1757-72), and title disputes.

Thomas H. Moreland has been the Town Historian for Austerlitz since 2016, after serving several years as chair of the Research Committee of the Austerlitz Historical Society. In June 2018, the Old Austerlitz Historical Society published Moreland’s book — ‘The Old Houses of Austerlitz.’ Based on six years of original research, the book contains the first full history of the Town of Austerlitz, an area first settled in 1757 as the proprietorship of Spencers Town, and a monograph, by Michael Rebic, on the local architectural styles in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Most of the book is devoted to individual histories of each of the 168 extant buildings in the Town of Austerlitz that appear on the 1888 atlas map of the town. These buildings –157 of them houses– date from as early as the 1760s.

Additionally, there are some 20 short articles on aspects of Austerlitz history, such as the turnpikes and old roads, schools, and huckleberry picking, as well as on famous and infamous Austerlitz residents, ranging from Edna St. Vincent Millay to Oscar Beckwith – AKA the “Austerlitz Cannibal.”
