behold-LOGO-transBehold! New Lebanon is a living museum of contemporary rural American life. Their mission is to offer the public unprecedented access to contemporary rural American life — its people, their skills, ingenuity and heritage. One of the ways the museum accomplishes it’s mission is through educational and informational programs, such as the following.

Farm Animal Rescue with Claudette LeFebvre

UR_Claudette-Lefebree_IMG_4536From Behold! New Lebanon:
“In addition to owning and running the B&B at the Retreat at Pease Farm, Claudette LeFebvre offers a home for many rescue animals including a blind horse and his companion donkey, many chickens, and goats. She walks you through the farm, explaining why it was important to her that she save these types of animals, and how she came to being an animal rescuer. She shares what it takes to keep up on the farm. You can feed these friendly, lovely animals, creating a lasting experience for all ages.”

Lebanon Valley Farmer’s Market

One of my favorite Sunday rituals, the Lebanon Valley Farmer’s Market, will be closing down for the winter in a few weeks so if you haven’t been yet, do it soon.

The Lebanon Valley Farmer’s Market features roughly 20 local farmers, some of whom are located less than five minutes away from the market. The list includes Hand Hollow Farm and Windswept Farm plus the newly opened Shaker Mountain Canning Co.. You can get home-baked breads, fresh produce, cheeses, home-made Mexican meals and various goat-milk products from the vendors who return every Sunday.

The market is located just north of the intersection of routes 20 and 22 in New Lebanon, New York.

Dates
Sundays, 10am – 2pm
June – October

Biodynamic Winter Intensive 2011 Conference

The Biodynamic Winter Intensive 2011 Conference: Animals, Humanity and the Living Context of Agriculture, is a workshop for farmers, gardeners and others seeking a renewed relation to the land.

This week long conference is conducted by The Nature Institute and the Hawthorne Valley Farm Learning Center (Columbia County, New York) in partnership with the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association.

The Nature Institute and the Hawthorne Valley Farm Learning Center are offering two weeks of instruction to those seeking a fuller understanding of biodynamic agriculture. The first week will offer participants a way of becoming more perceptive land workers by deepening their observations of the qualitative and dynamic aspects of nature and by practicing flexible thinking in relation to animal and human development and evolution. The second week will extend these themes and introduce concepts and practices more specifically related to biodynamic agriculture, including: species-appropriate animal husbandry, holistic veterinary considerations, the evolution of the socio-economic context of agriculture, and the significance of farm individualization and the role of the biodynamic preparations.

The conference will be held February 13-18 and/or February 20-25. Fees are on a sliding scale: $250-450 for each week; or $400 to 800 for both weeks.(Fees for apprentices enrolled in the North American Biodynamic Apprenticeship Program are covered by the program.)
