Hitler’s Hollywood

Filmmaker Rüdiger Suchsland suggests that the Third Reich was essentially an immersive movie starring the German nation, produced and directed by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Hitler’s Hollywood collages key films from the more than 1000 features the Nazis produced from 1933-1945: musicals, melodramas, romances, costume dramas, war films and when the real war got tough, insanely lavish, over-the-top fantasies. The German volk were portrayed as happy and sporty with lives of exaggerated cheerfulness or, conversely, full of morbid yearning for a death that would serve the Fatherland. Hannah Arendt gives perspective and context: One of the chief characteristics of modern masses (is) they do not trust their eyes and ears, but only their imaginations. What convinces masses are not facts, not even invented facts, but only the consistency of the illusion. It’s a frightening insight that could just as easily apply to the American political landscape today. – Karen Cooper, Film Forum

Hudson Area Library History Room and the Hendrick Hudson Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution present “The History of the Robert Jenkins House, a home in Hudson: A Tour & Talk” by Jeane La Porta.

This program is a rare opportunity to tour and learn about the history of the Federal Style house at 113 Warren Street, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Robert Jenkins House has been owned by the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) since 1900. The house was built in 1811 by Robert Jenkins, son of one of the original Proprietors of the City of Hudson, who went on to serve as third and fifth mayor of Hudson.

Jeane La Porta, Regent of the Hudson Chapter DAR and Town of Claverack Historian, will give background information on the history of the DAR, including the Hendrick Hudson Chapter, as well as, Claverack Landing and the founding of the city of Hudson as a prelude to a discussion of the construction and history of the 206 year old house that the chapter calls home. The program will include visuals and many photographs will give the audience a rare peek into areas that are not open to the public. The Greenport Garden Club will be providing flower arrangements throughout the house for this special spring tour.

The Hendrick Hudson Chapter, NSDAR, maintains the Robert Jenkins House Genealogical, Research, and History Reading Room, which contains a growing collection of Columbia County and regional genealogy, and the Robert Jenkins House Historical Collection as a repository for memorabilia relating to the history of the area, the city of Hudson and the whaling industry.
