Shaker Swamp Conservancy Meeting, Nov 11

The Shaker Swamp Conservancy is an all-volunteer New York State Not-For-Profit corporation, governed by a board of directors. The group’s goal is to raise awareness of the ecological and historical significance of the 495-acre Shaker Swamp, a natural wild tract of land in the center of the Town of New Lebanon.

The SSC is taking the lead in New Lebanon’s efforts to discover how knowledge about medicinal botanicals was transmitted from the Native Americans to the Shaker Society, and then to the Tilden Company. The Tilden Company, the first pharmaceutical company in the US, built its factory adjacent to the Shaker Swamp.

The Conservancy group meets throughout the year to report on the progress of the Project, work on communication with supporters and partners, especially the Columbia Land Conservancy, the Farmscape Ecology Program and landowners, and discuss how best to extract the history of the Swamp, revitalize it and make it public, and provide opportunities for education and recreation.

The next meeting is open to the public, and scheduled for this Saturday, at the New Lebanon Library. The meeting will be followed by a short walk to the swamp area.

A Classic Midcentury Ranch w/ Income Potential in East Chatham

This classic 3-bedroom, 2-bath Ranch on nearly 3 acres in East Chatham has multiple surprises. There’s a roomy suite with separate entrance, bedroom, full bath, living room and kitchen. This suite is ready to use as an AirBnB rental, or guest suite. It could also be converted into a large master suite.

The home’s main living area features a large living room with a wood-burning fireplace, and newly refinished wood floors. The home’s Eat-In Kitchen features original vintage 1960’s counters and cabinets that are all in perfect condition. The kitchen also has a distinctive wood-burning stove in a multi-toned brick corner hearth. There are also two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a bonus room, that could be an office or additional bedroom.

A mudroom connects the expansive garage to the kitchen, backyard, and laundry area. Mature trees in the front yard create a secluded appearance, while the large backyard is completely private with surrounding woods that can be enjoyed from the 3-season porch.
