Winter Walk 2017 Festivities From Hudson Hall

Winter Walk is an annual Hudson celebration that brings upwards of 20,000 people to the town’s mile-long Warren street. The event is organized by Hudson Hall, which is also presenting some additional Winter Walk festivities.

SANTA FINDS A NEW HOME AT HUDSON HALL
Hudson Hall West Room, 5-8pm

Hudson Hall has received confirmation from the North Pole that a new representative will be visiting children at Hudson Hall for the duration of Winter Walk this year. Hudson’s own Mark Orton takes a short hiatus as co-owner of Warren Street’s Davis Orton Gallery to assume the identity of the jolly bearded man. After being welcomed in his horse-drawn carriage to Hudson Hall at 5pm by Harmony Project Hudson, Santa will be hearing Christmas wishes and giving out a free gift-wrapped book to every child.

Also on the first floor at Hudson Hall will be Harney & Sons Tea, who will be offering samples of their delicious hot beverages and the chance to win a winter wreath or Christmas tree in their free Winter Walk raffle.

RIP THE NUT
Hudson Hall Performance Hall, 5:15pm- 8pm
Free, no reservations required
Stage Direction: Adam H. Weinert
Featuring Logan Frances Kruger, Brett Perry, Emma Sandall, Davon Rainey and Adam H. Weinert

RIP THE NUT is a raucous, Hudson Valley-inspired mash up of Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle and The Nutcracker Suite. This enchanting, family-friendly show will take place in Hudson Hall’s historic performance hall from 5:15pm. Featuring dance, storytelling and song, Rip’s adventure through time will be performed as a narrative loop for the duration of Winter Walk, with each cycle roughly 25 minutes each. In addition to performing himself, Hudson-based choreographer Adam H. Weinert has engaged renowned dancers Logan Kruger, Brett Perry, and Davon Rainey as the core group of performers, along with ex-Royal Ballet ballerina and now Hudson resident, Emma Sandall.

Every iteration begins and ends with live narration from a different Hudson Valley personality, and will include dance and musical performances by local community partners organized by Operation Unite NY. These include the talented students of the Sternfeld Dance Studio, Seano the Clown’s Circus Wonderland, Harmony Project Hudson, Body Playground, Kuumba Dance & Drum, Hudson Valley Academy of Preforming Arts, young rising dance star Orlando Harbutt and more.

THE UKRAINIAN WINTER STAR
1st and Warren Street
Artist: Maryna Bilak Haughton

Ukrainian-born artist and Warren Street resident Maryna Bilak Haughton has designed and built a spectacular Ukrainian Winter Star sculpture/installation for the 21st Anniversary of Winter Walk. Based on a traditional Ukrainian symbol, the brightly lit, three-dimensional wooden structure stands eight feet tall with eight lit rays emanating from the center. “Ideologically, this is a symbol of order and the world creation”, says Bilak Haughton. “It connects all sides of the world and indicates absolute balance, harmony and equilibrium. The octagonal star is a very ancient positive symbol of the sun and light, symbolizing birth and the creator of the Universe.”

Author Event at Chatham Library: Winifred Gallagher Discusses Her Book, “How the Post Office Created America”, Dec 2

Award-winning author & local resident, Winifred Gallagher, will talk about her most recent book, “How the Post Office Created America”. A masterful history of a long underappreciated institution, Gallagher examines the surprising role of the postal service in our nation’s political, social, economic, and physical development.

“How the Post Office Created America” is an ode to a little-heralded but flagship government enterprise. [Gallagher] reminds us … that the post office forged a communications revolution just as far-reaching as the later telegraph and internet revolutions.”—The New York Times Book Review

This presentation will be followed by a question and answer period, a book sale & signing, and a reception.
