The Hudson Area Library History Room in collaboration with the Jacob Leisler Institute for the
Study of Early New York History presents Fanatic or Martyr: Jacob Leisler, a Window into an
Age
, a virtual talk by Dr. David Voorhees on Thursday, January 27th.

On May 16, 1691, Jacob Leisler, de facto governor of New York, was hung til half-dead then
beheaded before the largest gathering in New York City up to that date. Leisler’s administration
had created a bitter division in New York. This presentation looks at how the deep emotions
Jacob Leisler aroused reveal much about the milieu in which he lived and continued to echo in
historical evaluations. Moreover, Leisler’s immediate family and their households of servants
and enslaved persons, their trade and marital connections, and their actions provide insights into
the broader social, ideological, economic, artistic, and political events of colonial New York and
its place in the larger world at a time of tremendous change.

Dr. Voorhees is director of the Jacob Leisler Papers Project, formerly located at New York
University, as well as the Jacob Leisler Institute headquartered in Hudson. He’s also managing
editor of de Halve Maen (The Half Moon), a quarterly scholarly journal published by The
Holland Society of New York. An NYU research scientist, he is a former managing reference
history editor at Charles Scribner’s Sons and has published numerous historical works and
articles, and been a consultant on historical exhibits at the Museum of the City of New York and
the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan among others.

The Jacob Leisler Library Lectures are made partially possible through the generous support of
the Van Dyke Family Foundation.

Window On Hudson Presents Art Exhibition & Receptions: Becca Van K – “Some Soft Thoughts”

Window On Hudson proudly ends the year with “Some Soft Thoughts” by mixed-media fiber artist Becca Van K.

Window On Hudson proudly ends the year with “Some Soft Thoughts” by mixed-media fiber artist Becca Van K.  Van K has filled the windows and indoor exhibition space with a large grouping of woven objects including wooden chairs, folding chairs, wall hangings, and much more.  These functioning furniture pieces are created with bright neon colored yarns, beads, and fake fur, creating the atmosphere of a late 90’s techno club VIP room heavily which is referencing the Memphis interior design style.

“Some Soft Thoughts” will have two artist receptions, both taking place during citywide Hudson, NY events.

Reception Number One: Saturday, December 4th, 2021, from 5-8pm – during Winter Walk

Reception Number Two: Saturday, December 11th, 2021, from 5-8pm – during the

2econd Saturday Hudson Gallery Crawl

“Some Soft Thoughts” provided Van K the opportunity to expand her ongoing body of work where she experiments with new techniques, recycled materials and objects and asks us to reconsider what is defined as “furniture” and what is labeled as “art.”  Van K says, “My artistic spirit is committed to tenderness, reverence, generosity, and humor. I draw inspiration from the natural world, 80s/90s graphics and nostalgia, house/techno music, and the concept of comfort. I weave a collective blanket of meditation in the repetitive acts of handcraft, walking, and listening to techno. I enter a nurturing and otherwise inaccessible headspace when I engage in these repetitive acts, which translates to works that are infused with care and personality.

“I think of myself as an interdisciplinary collage artist. I take material elements from unconventional sources and create something entirely new. Consistently vacillating between the realm of craft and fine art, my practice utilizes needlepoint, latch hook rug making, and macrame. These largely overlooked techniques are a map of my self-taught and mother-taught experiences. I take pride in the time-consuming nature of this work, and aim to create pieces that subvert conventional notions about the functions of handcraft.

“The joy of my viewers is at the center of my practice.”

Becca Van K is a mixed-media fiber artist based in New York’s Catskill Mountains. She has exhibited widely in the Hudson Valley & Capital Regions, and firmly believes in art as a conduit for community support/engagement. She has recently participated in exhibitions at: The Yard: City Hall Park (New York, NY), Columbia College (Columbia, MO), and ArtPort Kingston (Kingston, NY). She is a recipient of a 2021 NYSCA Community Arts Grant through CREATE Council on the Arts and a 2020 New York Foundation for the Arts “Keep NYS Creating” Grant.  Torn between city nightlife and the woods of the Catskills, she’d only leave New York if there were techno clubs in the desert.  She has climbed all 35 of the tallest peaks in the Catskills and doesn’t know what to do next.

“Some Soft Thoughts” will be on view from 12.1.21 – 1.3.21.  If you can not attend a reception but would like to see the indoor works please contact jeremy@windowonhudson.org.

Window On Hudson takes your health seriously.  All visitors are asked to wear a mask indoors, regardless of their vaccination status, and enjoy their refreshments outside.  During our receptions, the front door will remain open at all times.  Please bundle up!

Visit the Hudson Area Library for a Special One-Day Sale of Hudson’s History then
visit the Library’s Holiday Window Display at Winter Walk 25th Anniversary!

On Saturday, December 4th before Hudson’s Winter Walk festivities begin, the library will
have a special one-day sale, Give the Gift of Hudson’s History, in the community room of the
library at 51 North 5th Street. After purchasing unique items for your holiday shopping at the
library head out to Warren Street, 5-8pm, as Winter Walk returns to its street festival format to
celebrate 25 years as Hudson’s favorite winter celebration. And make sure you visit the Hudson
Area Library’s homage to Hudson’s fascinating history at 441 Warren Street, which includes
Bob Rasner’s vintage trains set in an historic setting of Warren Street buildings.

441 Warren Street happens to be the former home of Rowles Studio, which preserved negatives
from various photographic studios in the building from the 1860s into the 1980s that capture
Hudson throughout these years. The window at 441 Warren Street will feature images from
Rowles as well as historic postcard and map collections.

“The library is pleased to participate in Winter Walk for the fourth year. We are proud and happy
to share some of our History Room resources with Warren Street visitors this holiday season”,
stated Emily Chameides, library director, “We congratulate Hudson Hall on its 25th Anniversary
of this marvelous community event!”

The sale at the library includes archival quality copies of historic maps, aeroviews, and posters of
Hudson from 1871 – 1923; sets of night-scene and Warren Street postcards; a set of note cards of
prominent buildings from an 1871 map of Hudson; and tote bags and tea towels with a line
drawing of the historic Armory by local artist and musician Tony Kieraldo. To view these items,
visit the new History Room website, historyroom.hudsonarealibrary.org, and click on “Shop”. In
addition to items in the online shop, there will be unique gifts including one of a kind framed
photographs and antique books on the history of Hudson.

All proceeds benefit the Hudson Area Library’s History Room. Consider giving the Gift of
Hudson’s History this holiday season! Your friends and family will receive unique items and you
will be funding the work of preserving and making accessible to the public the history of the
Hudson area.

The History Room has made a priority of digitizing images, video, and audio – including oral
histories – archiving historic collections and making them accessible to the public. Current
projects include developing online websites for the Black Legacy Association of Columbia
County and HAL Oral History Projects, digitizing all City of Hudson directories from 1851 –
1940, and archiving the Arthur Koweek Urban Renewal Papers.

The Hudson Area Library has a dedicated History Room whose primary mission is to acquire,
preserve, and make accessible the history of the library’s service area, which includes Hudson,
Greenport and Stockport. These holdings are maintained, preserved, and protected in a secure,
conservation-quality repository that is open to the public by appointment only at this time, due to
concern for the health and safety of library patrons. For an appointment contact Brenda Shufelt
by email: brenda.shufelt@hudsonarealibrary.org or phone: 518-828-1792 x106. Online research
requests for information on local history are available on the History Room website. This is a
free service to the public.
