At The Crandell: ‘Green Book’ & ‘Roma’

Now Playing at the Crandell Theatre! Green Book is showing nightly today, through next Thursday, and Roma will be the weekend matinee with afternoon showings on both Saturday and Sunday.

When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Roma

The most personal project to date from Academy Award (R)-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien), ROMA follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. Cuarón’s first project since the groundbreaking Gravity in 2013, ROMA will be available in theaters and on Netflix later this year.

At The Crandell: ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ & ‘The Guilty’

This weekend at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham, Mary Poppins is the main feature, and the Sunday matinee is The Guilty.

Mary Poppins Returns

Directed and produced by Rob Marshall, “Mary Poppins Returns” also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books.

The Guilty

When police officer Asger Holm is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. As the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear, Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears, as the ticking clock and his own personal demons conspire against him. This innovative and unrelenting Danish thriller uses a single location to great effect, ratcheting up the tension as twists pile up and secrets are revealed. The Guilty scored a remarkable 99% among Rotten Tomatoes top critics and is Denmark’s submission to the Best Foreign Film category for this year’s Oscars.

Film Columbia 2018 is over, but the Crandell Theatre in Chatham continues it’s year-round offerings of new releases. Here’s what’s playing now.

At The Crandell: WiseBodies Benefit Screening of ‘Thirsty’

WiseBodies, which offers a unique approach to whole-being sexuality education, is hosting a fundraiser screening of the movie, Thirsty. The screening, which will be at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham, will be followed by a Q&A after, with the film’s producer, Lisa M. Thomas; and star of the film, Scott Townsend; and Isa Coffey, founder and Director of WiseBodies.org.

At The Crandell: ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ & ‘The Seagull’

This weekend there are dinosaurs and birds at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham. The main event is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Sunday’s matinee is The Seagull.

It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.

When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.
