Here’s the announcement from the Crandell:

“The Crandell’s curtains will be drawn for the foreseeable future, but we’re still working to bring you some of the exciting programming that we’ve had on deck for you this spring. In partnership with some of our favorite distributors, we’re happy to announce the Crandell’s new Virtual Screening Room program. Purchase a ticket through one of the links offered on our website to watch world-class cinema in the comfort and safety of your own home — with 50% of the box office benefitting the continued operations of the Crandell Theatre. This week’s offerings include Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You, Romanian crime caper The Whistlers, and Cannes 2019 Jury fave Bacurau.

Your ticket allows you to screen the film for five days following your purchase, and you’ll be able to stream it on compatible streaming platforms, your mobile device or your web browser — please see our Virtual Screening Room FAQs for more full details. Although NASA scientists are claiming the unexpected eclipse and strange “hot hail” are nothing to worry about, Dr. Hans Zarkov knows better, and takes NY Jets Quarterback Flash Gordon with him into space to rectify things. They land on planet Mongo, where the despot Ming the Merciless is attacking Earth out of pure boredom. With the help of a race of Hawkmen, Flash and the gang struggle to save their home planet.

FilmColumbia Marks Its 20th Anniversary, October 18-27

Hosted by The Crandell Theatre, FilmColumbia is an annual eight-day festival of world-class films representing major studios, independents, international films, animated features, documentaries and children’s short films.

2019 marks FilmColumbia’s 20th anniversary, with nearly 60 films, including new releases from acclaimed directors Noah Baumbach, Alex Gibney, Ken Loach, Terrence Malick and the late Agnes Varda, and lauded performances from Benedict Cumberbatch, Laura Dern, Adam Driver, Isabelle Huppert, Scarlett Johansson, Clive Owen, Michael Shannon, Marisa Tomei and Alfre Woodard, among many others.

Schedule includes winners of five major awards at Cannes, inluding the Palme d’Or, and major movies screened at the Toronto, New York, Venice, Berlin, Telluride and Sundance Film Festivals.

For the fourth consecutive year, the festival will present a special tribute to an acclaimed artist with ties to Columbia County. This year’s honoree is producer, distributor, writer and director James Schamus, who has been a key player in the independent filmmaking world for 30 years. FilmColumbia 2019 will honor Schamus on October 18-19 with film screenings, a Q&A and a special benefit reception.

The Palace Theatre along with Film Albany is excited to roll out the red carpet for the Capital Region premiere of James Franco’s THE PRETENDERS on Saturday, October 5.  Filming for THE PRETENDERS took place in 2016 throughout Albany and the Capital Region including the Palace Theatre.

Directed by James Franco, the drama, written by Will Patterson and Jesse Woods – stars Jack Kilmer (The Nice Guys), Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe), Shameik Moore (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse), Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal), Brian Cox (X2: X-Men United), Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow), Juno Temple (Maleficent) and James Franco.

Life imitates deadly art as French New Wave obsessed film student Terry (Jack Kilmer) and his best friend, the smooth talking Phil (Shameik Moore) are both seduced by mysterious actress Catherine (Jane Levy). The longer they know each other, the more they realize they don’t truly know the real Catherine. After years of sex, betrayal, and collateral damage, the three careen into a lifestyle that leaves one of them fighting for their life.
