More on the film from CrandellTheatre.org;

This is the boomer blockbuster that awakened Hollywood (finally), to the existence of a huge graying audience. A throwback to classic Miramax fairy tales like Enchanted April, and stuffed with top shelf British actors of a certain age—Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, and Bill Nighy—who don’t let us down. Dame Judi is magnificent, and Smith and Wilton allow their raillery to spill over from Downton Abbey to the big screen. Director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) shepherds the stellar cast in search of a cheap vacation to exotic Jaipur, India, where they find themselves trapped in a dilapidated turn of the century—the 19th Century—mansion where they absorb the film’s comforting message: you don’t have to be an Avenger to have a good time, and it’s not too late to start over, no matter what your age. I know its taken a long time for this film to find its way to Chatham, but it’s well worth the wait, and if you’ve seen it once, see it twice.

Restoring the Hand House

The Hand House, built in 1788, is one of New Lebanon’s oldest buildings. In May, this historic, but decaying building, was purchased by Mountain Road School.  Over the summer it will be renovated for use as an elementary school and in the process, reclaim some of its previous grandeur.

Maintaining the historic integrity of an old building while renovating it for modern use can present some unusual challenges. Stephen Bedford, PhD, the former co-director of the historic preservation program of UMass and Hancock Shaker Village, will address some of these issues, such as balancing costs, code requirements and historic accuracy.  He will also discuss what makes a building worth saving and why communities would want to preserve its old structures.  He will be joined by a panel of local experts in an audience question and answer.

This program is free and open to the public. Sponsored by Mountain Road School,Lebanon Valley Business Association, and the Lebanon Valley Historical Society.
WHEN:       Sunday (June 1)
